The Hermitage

Home of President Andrew Jackson

Visiting the Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson is a great way to spend a few hours in Nashville. You can learn about the role that he played in the history of Nashville, Tennessee history and in the United States History.

The entire tour takes about two hours. The visitor center has a short film that you can watch and has several exhibits that you will want to see. It also has a museum store and a café if you are hungry.

The mansion is beautiful. It was damage by a fire in 1834 and President Jackson had it remodeled in the Greek Revival style and most of the furniture in the home was purchased by the Jackson family to replace pieces in the fire.

The staff is in period costume and are there to tell you about the home and to answer questions you may have.

You will want to tour the grounds to see the beautiful gardens. You will find Jackson’s tomb and see stuff related to slavery and farming there.

Jackson's first home, a log cabin is also on the grounds. You can also drive about a 1/2 mile to the Hermitage Church and Tulip Grove Mansion although you cannot go inside of these buildings.

You can take a horse-drawn wagon ride through the grounds if you want to. The wagon driver will tell you about life on the 1000 plantation for Jackson and his family as well as the slaves.

You cannot use your camera inside the mansion but you can take pictures everywhere else on the property. Hermitage Wagon

Hours of operation are:
April 1-October 15: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
October 16-March 31: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and the third week of January.

Andrew Jackson's home is located 12 miles east of downtown Nashville and is accessible from Interstate 40, exit 221A. From I-65 North the Hermitage is accessible from exit 92, (Old Hickory Boulevard South exit).
