Nashville Recovers from the Largest Natural Disasters Floods

The 2010 Nashville flood was one of the largest natural disasters floods in Tennessee history. The recovery efforts are Incredible. What is so amazing about Nashville is the volunteer spirit of the people that live here. Below is a video showing some of the flooding in East Nashville.

This volunteer spirit is not surprising to Tennesseans, because it is just a way of life here. When a neighbor, friend or stranger is in need, Tennesseans are the first to jump in and help. You can see that volunteer spirit in Nashville and middle Tennessee as volunteers help flood victims of the 2010 Nashville Flood.

On May 1st 2010 torrential rains came and stayed in Nashville for two days resulting in devastating floods. Some people lost their homes, some lost their businesses, some lost their jobs and some lost their lives in this tragedy. It was the flood of the century.

Some Nashville tourist attractions were flooded. The Grand Ole Opry, the Opryland Hotel and the Opry Mills Mall suffered extensive damage. The Cumberland River came out of the banks into downtown Nashville flooding many of the businesses in the entertainment district of Nashville.

Residents and businesses in several other neighborhoods of Nashville were flooded by smaller rivers and creeks in the area. Before the rains ever stopped there were volunteers out there in boats rescuing people from their homes and the roads including interstates. The local churches were providing shelters for the victims. . The Red Cross, and other organizations also pitched in to help. People were making sandwiches to feed the victims and rescuers while the rain just kept pouring down.

After the rains stopped the volunteer efforts just blossomed. It is amazing to see the people of Nashville helping one another. Dozens of churches were out there providing assistance to the victims. The radio stations began setting up stations to receive food, water and donations for the aid of flood victims.

Local stores also set up areas for donations of supplies. The people of Nashville and middle Tennessee came out in groves to bring supplies, to remove debris and just to help in any way they could. They are still volunteering to help in the relief efforts.

There are a lot of entertainers that live and work in Nashville and they are leading the way in fund raising efforts to help get Nashville back on solid ground. Many of the stars raising money for flood relief have had extensive damage to their own homes. They are having concert after concert to raise money for flood victims.

Local restaurants came together to have an “Eat Out for Nashville” day in which they donate a portion of their proceeds from the day to assist in the flood relief effort.

The City of Nashville employees also deserve a pat on the back. Even though they got paid for their efforts, it was a tremendous effort from all of them. They worked long hours trying to keep the citizens of Nashville safe. They have probably volunteered in the flood relief effort in some way as well.

To the people of Nashville and middle Tennessee, helping others is just the right thing to do. The people of Nashville and middle Tennessee can be proud of their response to the 2010 Nashville Flood.
